Tomoyoshi Date & Bill Seaman – Duet

Tomoyoshi Date and Bill Seaman are artists well-known for their extensive collaborations, focusing on the realms of electroacoustic and minimalist composition. We’ve previously written about Tomoyoshi Date’s collaborations with Stijn Hüwels (Home Normal, Laaps), and it’s certainly worth highlighting Bill Seaman’soutstanding 2023 project with Tim Diagramand Stephan Sphera(Laaps). Now, these two artists join forces to present Duet, released by the British label Quiet Details, offering their unique interpretation of the “quiet details” concept.

Their new album combines piano-based pieces with carefully crafted micro-ambient textures, incorporating minimal use of electronics and other instruments. As silence intertwines with the resonant tones of the piano, subtle rustlings, clinks, creaks, and gentle taps discreetly fill the space. Measured melodies and cool, minimalist textures patiently shape compositions that radiate a pleasant and introspective atmosphere. The sonic palette is occasionally enriched by the inclusion of violin and clarinet, which intensify the depth of the soundscapes.

Duet is an exquisite work of minimalist aesthetics that demands attentive listening, with fine details that truly shine when experienced through headphones. The album’s physical edition is presented in a limited series as a glass-mastered CD housed in a six-panel soft matte digipak made from heavy recycled cardboard, featuring Quiet Details’ signature design aesthetic.
